Today we mourn our lost kin in Florida.
We here at Misty For Congress are mortified because last night in Florida 50 people lost their lives and over 50 people were wounded. This is one of the largest mass shootings on american soil in history. This is an act of violence and hatred. We can pick this issue apart and say that it is a Hate Crime because it was against the LGBTQ+ Community. We can say it was a terrorist attack because of the terror it is inspiring across the United states and the world. We can talk about how it was a mass shooting because the violence was perpetuated with guns and bullets. But what this is, is a tragedy where one human hurt other humans because of fear. We don't have to pick this apart to point out one thing as the "evil" that started this, but the evil is fear and all of the other symptoms are how fear is expressed. Method or location or who was attacked could have changed but this would still be a vile expression of hatred based on fear.
The problem with fear is that it is a poison that gets into our system and our community. Fear, anger, and hatred are easy to respond to with the same, but that doesn't solve anything. We are asking you to find a way to respond with love to this tragedy. Focus on the immediate and then look towards what can be done in the future.

Some LGBTQ+ friends and family might be severely emotionally impacted by this situation and if they were already struggling could be a tipping point. If someone reaches out or you think they could need help direct them to It gets better's page for several resources for crisis assistance.
Equality Florida, the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization is collecting contributions via this GoFundMe page to support the victims of the horrific shooting at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub. They are already getting a lot of donations, over 10k people at the time we wrote this note. I am sure that with over 100+ Victims their estimate for how much they will need to help them all is on the light side. Show the love with a few bucks, every dollar counts.
Because of the law's in the united states Gay and Bisexual men are barred from giving blood unless they have been celibate for the last year. This severely limits the LGBTQ+ community from being able to support the victims of this particular shooting. Please check if you're eligible to give blood so you don't waste your time and get frustrated. Please help your fellow Americans and if you are able to donate blood, make that donation. It can be anywhere not just in Orlando that they could use your help with blood. Remember this is something you can do more than just today or this week; the need for blood is everywhere.
America's Blood Centers - there is a "where can i donate" link you put your zip in on this page (towards the top right)
American Red Cross - You can enter it by your zip code for current drives or look up centers by clicking on the map
Bonfils Blood Center - Zip code or city can be entered to find a location to donate
